There’s another side of fatherhood that doesn’t get talked about that much. That sometimes… most of the time… it’s just hard.
Throughout life, all of us have unbearable moments. They could be physically or mentally agonizing. We can’t wait for it to be over. But there’s a simple thought exercise that helps me get through it with gratitude: death.
I wasn’t ready for the birth of my son, but he came and completely changed my life. After my wife labored for 35 hours, and then spending a week in and out of the hospital, it’s taught me some important lessons about parenthood and life.
As I expect my first child, there’s this enormous weight of responsibility, of caring for another human being that’s completely dependent on you. But beyond the thought of just trying to keep this child alive, there’s another immense responsibility I feel.
It’s shaping the kind of man that my son will grow up into. I want to be intentional about the man he becomes. So as I prepare to be a father to my son, Emerson, I’ve decided to focus on 3 things that I hope to instill into his character.
